Folic acid is a B vitamin – also known as B9 – which provides essential nutritional support during conception and pregnancy. It is recommended by the Government’s Chief Medical Officers for all women planning a pregnancy. They advise a daily supplement when trying to conceive until at least the 12th week of pregnancy as supplemental folic acid intake increases maternal folate status. Low maternal folate status is a risk factor in the development of neural tube defects in the developing foetus.
